Hey Lola, I am kinda old and work in theatre and always considered myself not a musical person. I saw the Tim Burton film on release when I was in collage because I *am* a horror person. Hated it. Thought I hated the musical. This vid made me check out the stage version and soundtrack and I fucking love it. So...um...good fucking job with vid. I have also hated a lot of Tim Burton but for some reason never made the leap to check out Sondheim. So thanks so much for the push and making a new fan. A good lesson on keeping my biases in check.

this is probably the 5th time ive watched this video, i keep coming back to it because im just astounded by your analysis. i come from a family with terminal STEM brain and no media literacy, like we only know math and never understand whats going on below the surface in books and movies. your understanding of media is like you speak a different language, that i do not speak. i keep coming back to this video because the depths you go into are just so beautiful. like when you talked about what the meaning of incest can be in fiction it was like a lightbulb went off in my head and then immediately burned out. like it was a completely new concept to me, but i know what youre talking about, but also i just dont understand it on an emotional level. your videos are just great, i love them.

This is maybe slightly pedantic but the example of 'Wimbledon' as 'bad narrating' is trying to fit a square peg into a round hole. Narration would be a third party describing the character's thought process, not the character themselves reprising their inner monologue.

I live in the Portland area, so my ears perked up when you mentioned the theater company you work for will be doing Sweeney this season. I've been out of the loop for years, but I grew up in the Portland theater community, with my parents both active in various spheres for decades. Long story short: thanks for the plug, I'll be looking into Twilight Theater Company, because MAN, I miss live theater.

God PLEASE do Into the Woods. It's my favorite musical and the Disney version just... neutered it. None of the jokes hit. It was devastating. The version I watch constantly is a proshot from the late 80s/early 90s but there's a version on Broadway Plus that takes place on a stage in the woods themselves that feels amazing. I still prefer the 80s/90s version because I like the narrator better, but the In the Woods version is really well done and I do like how they frame it (and I think the Narrator is really good, it's just funnier what happens when the Narrator in the 80s/90s version is played by who they are. It's... less funny in the other version. When you watch it, you'll see why, I think.)

it's SO absurd hearing Burton talk about setting and blood, like the show couldn't work without buckets of blood, when my introduction to Sweeney Todd was through the 2001 concert recording i found in my college library (absolutely surreal to watch it on youtube now and think about what my life would have been like if youtube existed then :p) and that show *blew my mind* even having worked in theatre, even having helped build and operate productions with minimal sets i never saw anything as *effective* as that show. it changed how i thought about theatre for the rest of my life. ...but like, sure Tim, put more blood in maybe that'll help.

I love theatre, and I love musicals. I think musical films - GOOD musical films - have a very special place, but also one of the hardest jobs in art, because it has to find the perfect in between, the perfect way to make an audience suspend their disbelief and go along with it. I've been a cinephile since i was a little kid and I adore theatre, probably because of who raised me (my dad is a stage actor, my mum went to film school), probably because of my own sensibilities as well.

This film is what made me like Sweeney Todd. That being said, I’m generally a musical fiend, and always kinda had a feeling it was inferior towards the original. It just opened the door for me; but it isn’t the only thing behind the door. Also, from the beginning, nobody wanting to see community theatre; I do. I want to see ALL the community theatre. I want to be IN all the community theatre also, but see it if I can’t. Put it directly into my veins immediately

For a video with a warning about offending people who love this movie, this is a very leveled and shockingly kind criticism of the movie. For me, I liked the movie for the same thematic reasons you give for why the stage musical were great, and I didn't see anything at all that Tim Burton was trying to change the tone of the character. Thanks for making this video, it helped me to better understand perspectives of a movie that I would not have otherwise considered at all.

Inpersonally just like stories, no matter how they’re told, be it ballet, opera, musicals, circus performances, kabuki, comic books, manga, novels, movies, or shows. I like songs and music in general, and when they serve a purpose in a story, all the better. If I say “ugh, they’re singing” it’s because I don’t like the story being told and the song sounds unnecessary in the work. Songs should be an extension of the script, a show of the character’s feelings and desires, not just slapped in to sell an album (though, admittedly, if the song is a banger, then I’ll forgive it)

Fuck me what a red hot take on this movie. This movie is how I was introduced to the soundtrack so I was completely brainwashed into thinking it was a masterpiece. I was also an *edgy teen* who was way too into Burton to see past the aesthetics of the film to reveal not much underneath. As an adult exploring the actual musical is a real eye opener. So much more going on, and so much more fascinating

I used to think I hated Sondheim, but I think I may just hate the adaptations of Sondheim I've been exposed to. Also, in my opinion, the suburban satire of Barry Sonnenfeld has aged better than the suburban satire of Tim Burton.

My first experience with Sweeney Todd was my friend showing me the movie and I thought it was fine but didn't really get into it. Then I was lucky enough to see an incredible production in Copenhagen and it was maybe the best theatre experience of my life. It was the energy and the humor and the chemistry between the characters that made all the difference for me. Of course not every can watch it live, but i think finding a proshot is a better introduction than the movie

i don't think People necessarily don't like theater, but Companies. it also doesn't help that theater is prohibitively expensive for the working class. i love musical theater, orchestra, performance in general but the last time i looked at buying tickets they cost more than my grocery bill. there's this cultural perception that theater is for rich people. it used to be way back when that most people could watch a live performance of something because television and radio didn't exist. now that they do, it's seen as more of a luxury. capitalism is destroying art but we all already knew that.

I personally wasn’t a huge fan of Depp’s performance in this movie. There’s some great, deep sorrow that works really well in some parts but that kind of feels like extent of what he does in the film? It feels kind of completely numb? And yes he is apathetic enough to kill people but he is also filled with so much grief and emotion and RAGE and I feel like that wild range is missed a bit.
